Typo Berlin Videopodcast: Roswitha Quadflieg

»Roswitha Quadflieg wuchs in Hamburg auf. Von 1969 bis 1974 studierte sie Malerei, Grafik und Typografie an der damaligen Fachhochschule für Gestaltung und der Hochschule für bildende Künste. Quadflieg machte ihren Abschluss als Diplom-Designerin. Im Jahr 1973 gründete sie die Raamin-Presse, ihre eigene Verlagswerkstadt in Schenefeld (Stadtrand von Hamburg), wo sie Werke der Weltliteratur mit eigenen Originalgrafiken in diversen Techniken in limitierten Auflagen druckte. Im Jahr 2003 – nach 30 Jahren – stellte sie die Raamin-Presse ein. Seitdem arbeitet Roswitha Quadflieg ausschließlich als Schriftstellerin.«

Auf der TYPO 99 zeigte Roswitha Quadflieg den Kindern der digitalen Revolution die physischen Vorbilder für die virtuelle Gestaltung am Bildschirm. Hier zu sehen.

Nomadic Design.de in South Africa

Two fellow students from the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, Fabian and Thomas (our flat mate) are now on their way to South Africa. They are planing to do a Design Walz during the next four months, meaning they don’t have a fixed route, but are going where they are needed and welcome. They are offering their design-skills in exchange to something to eat or a place to sleep, perhaps a beer. Peter Fischli / David Weiss in Hamburg

fragen & blumen eine retrospektive

On our short working trip to Hamburg (with the ZEBRA Stelzentheater) we had the possibility to visit the exhibition of Peter Fischli and David Weiss in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. The exhibition which is a cooperation with the Tate Modern, London and the Kunsthaus Zürich shows the first broad overview of the works of these two artists from Switzerland.

For their work, they make use of a large bandwidth of artistic forms of expression: Film and photography, art-books, sculptures made out of different materials, and multimedia-installations. They adapt objects and situations of the everyday life and place them into an artistic context — often using humour and irony.

The picture above shows questions that are projected to the wall, such as »Ist es ein Wunder, dass die Menschen nicht ständig umfallen?« I already knew a lot of these questions from the wonderful book »Findet mich das Glück?«

Also very impressive were the movies »Der rechte Weg« and »Der geringste Widerstand« with Ratte und Bär (rat and bear) of which I only saw little excerpts.

Pierre Mendell – Posters for Education

Pierre Mendell – Posters for Education is an exhibition taking place in the Gasteig in Munich at the moment. Pierre Mendell posters seem quite simple, but have a great meaning and message. The exhibition is on show until June 5th in the Gasteig. It’s worth a look!

Frohe Ostern

In Mexiko wird Ostern zwei Wochen lang wie ein Volksfest gefeiert. Girlanden aus Toiletten- und buntem Krepppapier schmücken die Straßen. Überall erklingt Musik, zu der die Leute feiern, tanzen und singen.

In Finnland gibt es am Ostersonntag leichte Schläge mit der Birkenrute, die an den Palmwedel erinnern soll, mit dem Christus in Jerusalem empfangen wurde. Am Ostermontag laufen Kinder laut lärmend durch die Straßen, um die Trauerzeit zu beenden und den Winter zu vertreiben.

In Südafrika werden an Ostern so genannte »Hot Cross Buns« gegessen. Das sind Rosinenbrötchen, auf denen ein Kreuz eingeritzt ist.

In Australien soll während der Osterzeit das Wasser gesegnet sein und Glück bringen. Daher schöpfen verlobte Paare nachts gemeinsam Wasser aus einem fließendem Bach. Sie bewahren es bis zu ihrem Hochzeitstag auf und besprenkeln sich dann gegenseitig damit.
Auch bringt statt dem Osterhasen das Bilby, ein Kaninchennasenbeutler, die Ostereier.

In Russland werden die Ostereier traditionell rot bemalt. Sie werden nicht versteckt sondern als Geschenk an Bekannte und Verwandte gegeben. Neben Ostereiern gibt es Kulitsch und Paskha, das ist Osterbrot mit Quark.

Auch in Griechenland werden die Ostereier rot bemalt. Rot steht hierbei als Farbe der Freude und als Symbol für neues Leben durch das Opfer Christi.

In Argentinien bitten Kinder ihre Paten oder Verwandten kniend um Segen. Dieser Segen kann sowohl symbolisch als auch in Form von Süßigkeiten sein.

Druckkunst Museum Leipzig

After the day on the book fair, we visited the museum for printing art the next morning. It’s all about type foundry, type composition and presses and very interesting and enlightening if you work with types nowadays. We were all very keen on participating on a workshop in the case room… We’ll see…

Book fair Leipzig

Last weekend we went to the book fair in Leipzig. We were a VW bus filled with typography students, joined by our professor. It was a very informative time, but next year we need to plan at least one additional day for it… There were so many books and events, we were only able to get a little glimpse of it.

Spring festival in Wiesbaden
